Ernest Hemingway said, “When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” Ximena Vengoechea thinks Ernest may be on to something. She is the author of Listen Like You Mean It: Reclaiming the Lost Art of True Connection. As a user researcher, she understands the importance of listening for understanding. This is true for product research and organizational success. Often, we find ourselves default listening. We are sort of paying attention, yet we don’t get the true experience or the emotions of the talker. Ximena tells Kevin we need to move to empathetic listening, which starts with the intention to listen. A listening mindset begins with humility, curiosity, and empathy. When we bring this to the table, not only are we better people, but we are also better leaders.
